Day 11 - Huron Pier & Lighthouse to Barcelona Harbor - Fri Aug 13 2021

We ran out of data on our cellular plan a few days ago (hence the delay in getting this blog out!), so we took the opportunity to stop at Kroger's in Toledo where we could  shop (great grocery shop!) get a coffee (in-store Starbucks) and do our wi-fi stuff (great wi-fi!). Afterwards Jane had some retail therapy at the local Goodwill!





With our administrivia completed we decided we much preferred time at the beach rather than the limited culture of Toledo, so off we set to Barcelona Harbor via Huron Pier & Lighthouse.  

Huron Pier was rather pretty - very, very shallow little bay (we tried swimming, but about 1/4 mile out we were still only up to our knees!). So we walked out to the lighthouse, got a little exercise in, and moved on ... 



  
We had a lovely drive to Barcelona, arriving in the early evening in time for a beer at the local hostelry. (We love ioverlander - we'd never have found this place without it, and it was a great place to park up for a night!)


We went for our usual evening constitutional walk and watched the sun set over Lake Erie. It was a lovely mild evening, with a gentle breeze wafting in from the water. Gorgeous!

Day 24 - Shenandoah National Park - Thurs Aug 26 2021

 Today was a day of driving, slowly, through acres and acres of trees along the backbone of the Shenandoah National Park, VA . As a vegetable I found this an extremely fascinating experience. There were so many beautiful trees and plants. But what did my Drivers think of it all? "Very nice, but a bit dull" - ye gods! Its at times like this I have to remember the kind of narrow thinking their species have, despite their other useful skills. It's astonishing to me how few trees or plants they can name. So, from all those hours of driving, we have the following small collection of photos: A small corner of the park (it is 105 miles long, and 10 or so miles wide). The big insight from my Drivers? "Aren't there a lot of trees?!" d'uh! Day 6 - Sun Aug 8 2021 - Loveland Walmart to Lake McConaughy, NE

  Loveland Walmart was a relaxed morning, Toby did some computer stuff, Jane chatting to Emma back in the UK. Then off we set for the drive to Lake McConaughy, NE - an old haunt where my drivers used to windsurf some 30 years ago.   On the way we did The Stinky - I was of course able to assist and provide the needed guidance, direction and steady hand expected.  ‘Big Mac’, as its known, is the largest lake in Nebraska, about 5 miles wide and 12 long, with big white sandy beaches. Its also really hot! We squeaked in at 17:00 and it was still 99F - luckily we got shade under a tree:    There are over 10 separate campgrounds in the park, each hosting maybe 60 - 100 sites - not like 3 decades ago, apparently, when this was just a wild untamed area with dirt roads and rattlesnakes!). But we got a lovely quiet area all to ourselves. I wonder why? Who cares - off for a swim:  The water was nice and warm, the white sand really really soft, almost like sugar....
