Day 4 - Harpers Corner, Echo Park and Walton Peak

A very early morning for this tired pickle - 06:00 saw us on the road heading out of our Green River campground bound for Harpers Corner, CO, to look deep into the Green River canyon down to Echo Park.  It proved to be quite a drive (nearly 2 1/2 hours, with all the stopping and starting, oohing and aahing from my drivers), but well worth it. I can only give you a couple of snaps, but take a look:

Here I am, on the overlook to Echo Park, with the road disappearing way off yonder far below us. Unfortunately the road is too rough for our road vehicle, but it looks like a fascinating place to go down in a 4x4!

Once on top of Harpers Corner one gets the most amazing views down, way down, into Green River Canyon, 1000's of feet below.  This is looking West, into Utah:

And turn your head 180 and look East, and here you see the Yampa River coming to meet the Green River (albeit hidden by the massive rock call Steamboat). Acres and Acres of beautiful rock, with narrow twisting canyons. Gorgeous!

We left Harpers Corner having spent a wonderful morning, planning on driving to Estes Park. But on the way we pulled over at Steamboat Springs, CO, and decided to try some wild camping on Walton Peak. Here we are, setting out off-road up the peak:

We found a spot right at the top, and got chatting to a lovely man, Greg, and his dog Louis. He'd been on the road for over a year (he sells Electricity to farmers in Texas for a living - no need to live anywhere particular!). But the storm clouds rolled in and we enjoyed some big Colorado downpours, the van shaking as the rain and hail pelted down, lightning off in the distance. Such a welcome after the dry and intense heat of Utah. Indeed, it got positively cold, and we all wished we'd bought warmer clothes!
