Day 8 - Peru, Illinois - Tue Aug 10 2021
We woke to a glorious sunrise,
but the day was soon shaping up to be another hot and sultry one, so we decided we’d spend the day driving beyond our scheduled stop and try to get close to Chicago, with the intention of having more time in the city.
We drove through Iowa - its windy, with big wind farms. You can see the windmills in the distance:
And you can start to see how big these are when you see a single blade, like here:
So it was no surprise when we stopped for lunch and the wind blew us all to pieces:
Toby was all for checking out but I led the charge and got his fat butt doing some exercise on the bench before we got blown out of there again:
After many long hours of driving we finally crossed the Mississippi and pulled into Walmart in Peru, Illinois - tired, and having survived a big thunder and lightning storm. We hot footed it into Walmart where we heard about the recent murders in Chicago and the dramatic increase in the murder rate in the area we wanted to go. Subsequently we found that the bloody art museum was going to be closed tomorrow anyway! So we wrote off Chicago and planned a day visit to the beach instead (‘oo needs nah stinkin’ kulcha, any road?)
